Marlene Ito, first female Principal second violin of Berliner Philharmoniker

Marlene Ito(伊藤 真麗音) won the audition to be the first Principal of the second violins, according to the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Marlene Ito is the first female to get this position with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Ms. Ito has been a member of the second violins since 2011. By winning the audition, she succeeds Christian Stadelmann, who passed away in July 2019.

Ms. Ito was born in Yokohama, Japan and grew up in Australia. After studying with Goetz Richer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she went to Germany in 2003 where she continued her study at University of Music Lübeck, and Berlin University of the Arts, studied with Nora Chastain. She was a scholarship horlder of Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker 2006-2008, and she studied with Toru Yasunaga, the first concertmaster at that time. In 2009, she was offered the position as Associate concertmaster at Berlin’s Komische Oper.

Since 2014, she is the Assistant of Nora Chastain at University of the Arts Berlin.
