[How to practice] Seitz concerto no.3 in g minor, op.12

Seitz Concerto no.3 in g minor, op.12 is a great work in Solos for Young Violinists, vol.2.

It is very suitable to perform in recitals, auditions and competitions.

Step 1: Learn the notes slowly

Let’s learn the notes slowly figuring out the rhythm and the pitch. Clicks are 8th note pulse as 110.

Step 2: Practice difficult section (m.13 and m.21-22)

Practice difficult section (m.13 and m.21-22) for the shifting

Especially m.21-22 should be practiced by itself. The rule is “change the position with remaining finger first, then get the note you aim for”. In this case, practice as:

Eighth note pulse and quater note pulse are written as above.

Step 3: Play through from the beginning with 8th note pulse.

Let’s play through from the beginning with 8th note pulse.

Step 4: Get used to the quarter note pulse.

Keep the same tempo, but now feel the quarter note pulse.

Step 5: Play a little faster.

Let’s play a little faster (quarter note= 75) and see how well you can play. 🙂

Now, let’s move onto the next section.

Step 6: Slow practice mm.32-39

Please practice slowly first.

When you practice, don’t forget to play very bottom notes of 3 notes chords.

Step 7: mm.40-43

Put grace notes when you shift in order to secure your hand moving to the new position.

Again, the rule is “changing the position with remaining finger, and then get the note of the new position.”

I know the intonation is a little complicated here, but you did not sound bad at all.

However, by using the recording, your playing will be even better next time 🙂

Step 8: m.44-45

I’m starting from the last beat of m. 43. Since there’s a crescendo on m. 43, we need to use a lot of bow for the last slur of the measure. That means we’ll wind up with playing near the frog for the last four notes of m.43, and that is fine.

So, when you start the Aflat on m.44, take time, play the note longer, and come to upper/middle part of the bow and play the arpeggios a UH/Middle.

We’ll discuss more details at your next lesson, but try this idea by then.

I look forward to listening at least up to m.72 at your next lesson.

Step 9: mm.88-90, and m.93

One of the problematic section is mm.88-90.

I highly recommend to practice first double stops only as you can hear in the video.

Then try adding 16th notes. Start with 4 notes per bow.

Then, as printed.

*****

Sometimes, some students have difficulty at m. 93.

Practice slowly. You can practice the motion of your bow arm only using open strings as you can hear in the video.

Then practice as printed.
